Surface Preparation

Surface Preparation

The key to a lasting finish is in perfect surface preparation.

This may require sanding, filing or sandblasting to clear any surface contamination, rust, oxidation or previous coating.

Parts may also require a plating process prior to coating to add to surface protection, create a barrier to moisture or to shield the part from electro-magnetic interference.

Before powder coating. all ferrous metals, such as steel, steel alloys and cast iron, are pre-treated with a 5 stage Iron Phosphate wash. Non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum, copper and brass, are cleaned thoroughly with caustic soap and high-heat, high pressure wash.

In addition, small parts are cleaned by hand with acetone.

We work with local partners for chemical conversion coatings, chromating, and anodizing.

For parts requiring conventional wet spray finishing, we use different types of primers, including sprayfill primers.  We also provide overcoating and clear coating on finished parts.

The devil is in the details!

Many of the parts we finish require masking of machined surfaces, critical surfaces, and threaded holes.  Over the years we’ve developed precision masking techniques for exacting dimensions.  We use a variety of hi-temperature tape, silicone caps and plugs, each designed for specific purposes.

Lasting Finish

Lasting Finish

We have many powder coating colors in stock.  We work with multiple powder coating suppliers to find the right powder coating product for each of our customers’ needs.

RAL colors and many specialty colors are readily available.  Custom color matches, from samples of Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams, for example, are available.  Pantone color matches are available.
We have extensive experience with all powder formulations, TGIC, Polyester and Polyester free, Epoxy, Urethane and hybrids.

We apply powder coating  in texture finishes, including river texture, sand texture, fine texture, leatherette, vein and non-slip textures.

We apply powder coating in various gloss levels, from deep matte, matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss.  We also apply transparent coatings which require a base coating and a transparent top coat, such as Brass, Gold, and Chrome-like coatings.

Oven temperatures are continuously monitored to ensure proper curing.  Precise coating thickness measurements are taken to ensure that our finishes meet the most exacting standards.  Destructive scratch testing is done to ensure proper adhesion for a long lasting finish.

Post finishing applications, screening, marking or labeling are done by our local partners.

Decorative/Protective

With years of experience in applying various powder and paint formulations, we understand the qualities of perfect decorative finishes and durable protective finishes.

Epoxy formulations provide superior hardness properties for applications in extreme environments and high use applications.

TGIC (tri glycidyl isocyanurate) Polyester, TGIC-Free Polyester, Urethane or Hybrid formulations provide excellent coverage, durability and brilliant finishes for decorative applications.

We have years of experience with various specialty formulations:

  • CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) for military applications
  • Electromagnetic Shield coatings for electronic enclosures
  • Antimicrobial coatings for sanitary applications
  • Non-Slip coatings for stairs and handrails and grab bars
  • FDA/USDA certified coatings for food handling applications
  • AAMA certified coatings for architectural applications

Refinishing

Refinishing

Restoring metal parts to their original beauty takes a combination of skill, knowledge and art.

In any outdoor environment, and especially in a saltwater environment here on the Jersey Shore, outdoor fixtures, furniture, and railings can weather quickly, showing oxidation, rust and/or fading, chipping and flaking finishes.

The same is true for our automotive customers. Many are restoring vintage parts. Others wish to change the color of existing parts.

Restoration begins with sandblasting to remove the existing finish, followed by a deep cleaning and for steel parts, a 5 Stage Iron Phosphate pretreatment.

Often, parts will be heated to a high temperature prior to powder coating to outgas any contaminants in the substrate. The parts are then cooled, reheated to a warm temperature and then powder coated. This will ensure coverage in small crevices and joints.

Depending on the application and the type of part being finished, a second coat is sometimes required.
